In health care, what are the pros and cons of collaborating with other health care departments both internal and external when separated by physical barriers?

Based on your past experiences and the knowledge gained during your course work, consider the following question, and post a substantive initial post:
In health care, what are the pros and cons of collaborating with other health care departments both internal and external when separated by physical barriers (e.g., floors, buildings, geogr aphy, and training professional differences)?
I currently work for a Walk-In Clinic, and I have been there for about 3 months now. I came into this company when it was transitioning from ownership and there have been pro’s and con’s during this transition.
The company has changed ownership two other times before now, and while most companies are going paperless, the clinic has become a paper problem. It will take approximately six months for the old company to transfer all the patient records into the system for the new company. During this transition, there have been so much confusion amongst the patients and staff.
The pros of this situation have to do with being able to get the correct information on the patients due to records being updated as new information is being given by the patient. The demographics of the patient chart will be updated and new information will be scanned into the patient chart so that the clinic can get back to being paperless. Also, it is good communication between the patient and staff members so the information can be communicated correctly and in a timely manner for the patient care to be handled accurately.
The cons of this situation are the communication between other hospitals and clinics for release of patient information when a patient is referred for x-rays, mammograms, and other tests that need to be done per the physician. Also, the communication between the pharmacies and the physicians needs to be better. Pharmacies tend to fax duplicate request for patient medication and it becomes a problem. The lack of employees has become another con in the clinic as well. There isn’t enough staff to handle the daily patient care.
The turnaround of patient care is slowed down due to having to wait on faxes for different test to be received before the patient can leave the room. Physicians must understand that all faxes will not arrive the same day due to the communication where the fax is being sent from and how many staff members will handle the fax.
I think that once the transition is complete, then the flow of patient care will return to normal and the new owners will then begin to see profit to where more staff can be hired and more training will become available.
