Ideally, the healthcare professional promotes the independence of consumer’s health and wellness through education, motivation, and by providing resources to implement and maintain activities that promote wellness. However, a culture of dependency is created by the healthcare professional if improper education is provided or if education is not provided in language the patient understands. Disease processes, medications, side effects, alternative therapies, laboratory monitoring, and lifestyle modifications are topics that healthcare professionals educate patients. On the other hand, dependence on healthcare providers is fostered by patient’s unwillingness or lack of motivation to be informed of their health and methods to improve health. Open communication regarding health and wellness promotion and including the patient in the plan of care promotes independence of the consumer (Frink, 2015). Patient health portals promotes consumer participation in health and wellness by allowing patients to view lab results, vital signs, medication lists, immunizations, and past medical history so the patient is informed of health status (Agency for Healthcare Resources and Quality, n.d.). In addition, patient involvement in care is promoted by patient health portals by the allowing patients to email providers through the patient portal.References:Agency for Healthcare Resources and Quality.
