Part One: Short Essays
Select ONE essay question from EACH of the sections below for a total of TWO ESSAYS. Each of these two essays should be between 3 -4 pages in length (approximately 750 – 1000 words). Your reply should state a single thesis, and your explanation should be based on analysis and evidence. You must use, analyze, and cite specific examples from the readings to support your claims. Keep in mind, however, that while you may draw from lectures and readings in presenting your argument, you must explain in your own words your understanding of the issues. You may approach each of the questions in any way you choose, but remember; this is not a summary, but a critical analysis/reflection! Be sure to address all questions within the prompt that you select.
SECTION ONE: Indigenous Mesoamerica
How would you discuss the worldviews and value systems of Indigenous peoples prior to European contact/invasion? How did these worldviews impact all aspects of life (science, agriculture, medicine, language, spirituality, origins etc.) for Indigenous peoples?
To what extent has the history of Mesoamerica been taught from a Eurocentric perspective? What theories, ideas, and/or terminology are problematic when trying to assert an Indigenous perspective? (For example: Bering Strait, Malintzin, Cuauhtemoc, Human Sacrifice…there are many more examples!)
