Case Study for ODP
Mary is a very anxious15 year old and has been accompanied by her Mother to theatre for a minor operation under local and is being checked into the department. Your mentor supervises you completing the admission process but decides to quickly nip to the toilet during the process in order to get back ready to transfer the patient into theatre. You observe that the consent form has been signed by Mary and that a comment has been added to the notes that Mary thinks she may be pregnant. You proceed to confirm this comment.
After transferring Mary into theatre your mentor attempts to insert a cannula into the dorsum of Maryas hand. Mary is startled by the sharp pain and withdraws her hand resulting in the cannula becoming dislodged with some blood spillage. Your mentor states that she has not really attempted a cannulation unsupervised before but decides to have another go anyway to save time.
